American anti-personnel mines will appear in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The transfer of these weapons was authorized by the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden. This decision by the White House is a radical change in its own policy and is caused by the intensifying offensive of Russian troops in the eastern regions of Ukraine. This was reported by The Washington Post.
The Biden administration said the transferred mines are “unsustainable” because they self-destruct after a period of time. This is done in order to minimize risks to civilians. However, arms control organizations warn of potential dangers and difficulties in clearing them in the future.
It is noted that Kyiv has long called for the supply of such weapons, given that Russia is actively using mines to slow down the Ukrainian offensive. Washington believes that mines will become part of Ukraine’s comprehensive defense strategy against the backdrop of significant losses at the front.
WP notes that the transfer of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine is also potentially controversial. In particular, more than 160 countries have signed an international treaty banning their use, as these weapons can cause long-term harm to civilians. Ukraine is also among the signatories of this agreement.
Let us remember that the other day it became known that the United States of America allowed Ukraine to beat Russia deep into Russia with Western weapons. The administration of President Joe Biden has lifted restrictions prohibiting Ukraine from using American weapons to strike the territory of the aggressor country. Some media noted that this applies only to the Kursk region.
