In Canada, parliament passed a resolution calling on the government to step up support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. The resolution introduced by MP Geezer McPherson received unanimous support from members of the House of Commons, Ukrinform reports.
“The House of Commons calls on the federal government to continue to provide significant military and humanitarian support to Ukraine to establish a comprehensive, just and lasting peace,” the resolution said.
Parliamentarians also called for a ban on Russian state media in all forms in Canada, support for Ukraine’s future NATO membership and strengthening of sanctions against Russia.
“We call for taking all possible steps for the return of prisoners of war to Ukraine, illegally detained civilians and children forcibly deported to Russia, as well as supporting efforts to bring justice for those war crime and the crime of aggression,” the document said.
In addition, the representatives “recognize that Ukraine is at the forefront of the free world, defending the values of freedom, democracy, international security and human rights.”
The adopted resolution is not legally binding for the government, but expresses the political will of the parliament.
We remind you that Canada will allocate 5 billion Canadian dollars (about $3.7 billion) to Ukraine as part of the G7 initiative “Accelerating the receipt of emergency revenues (ERA) for Ukraine.” These funds come from Russia’s fixed assets and will be used to support Ukraine during the war.
