The United States Department of Defense was not surprised by Russia’s decision to update its nuclear doctrine.
The United States has not seen any signs that Russia will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, US Department of Defense Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said at a briefing.
According to him, the Pentagon is not surprised by Russia updating its nuclear doctrine, and the Russian Federation has signaled its intention to do so in the past few weeks.
“This is the same irresponsible rhetoric that we’ve seen before and we’ve seen frankly in the last two years,” Singh said.
The official said that the department will continue to monitor this, but at the same time noted that the United States does not currently record any signs that Russia intends to use nuclear weapons on the territory of Ukraine.
The head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, signed a decree approving the Fundamentals of State Policy of the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear deterrence. The document was published on the official Russian legal information portal on November 19 and entered into force.
The updated doctrine provides that the basis for a nuclear strike can be “aggression against the Russian Federation and its allies by any non-nuclear state with the support of a nuclear state,” as well as a massive air attack by non-nuclear means, including drones.
The United States does not intend to change its nuclear policy in response to Russia’s new doctrine, which expands the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, Russia began building mobile shelters to protect against a nuclear attack.
