Police arrested a 51-year-old suspect with “severe mental health problems.”
Two people were killed and another injured after a 51-year-old man attacked passers-by in an unprovoked attack in New York. The attack happened on the afternoon of Monday, November 18 local time, the BBC reports.
It is known that the suspect stabbed two men on the street in Manhattan who died at the hospital. Another woman was injured.
New York City police say they have arrested a 51-year-old suspect following “unprovoked” knife attacks at three different locations. The attacker was a homeless man who had recently been convicted in a criminal case.
According to city officials, the suspect has “severe mental health issues” that require evaluation and there are questions as to why he is out on the street. The motive for the stabbing is unknown.
According to the police, the first person killed was a 26-year-old construction worker who was standing at his workplace when the attack occurred. The second victim was a 68-year-old man who was fishing in the East River when he was attacked. The third attack took place about two hours later, when a 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times outside the UN headquarters.
It was previously reported that a knife-wielding Chinese man attacked and injured three children in Switzerland.
