Soil samples and projectile fragments recovered contained a CS agent known as tear gas. This is a violation of international humanitarian law.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) identified direct evidence of the use of the banned chemical agent CS in the combat zone in Ukraine. This was stated in the organization’s report published on Monday, November 18.
It was noted that the incident that took place on September 20 near the village of Ilyinka in the Dnepropetrovsk region became the first confirmed case of the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.
Tests on samples collected from the scene revealed the presence of illicit CS gas. This fact indicates a violation of international humanitarian law and creates an additional threat to the civilian population.
At the same time, the organization stressed that the report “does not seek to identify the origin or origin of the toxic chemical.”
This is the first time the organization has confirmed the use of gas intended for mass destruction in regions where military operations are taking place in Ukraine.
Let’s recall that, according to the General Staff, in October, Russian troops used special ammunition with chemicals 323 times in combat operations against the Ukrainian Defense Forces, as well as 4,613 times since the beginning of the large-scale invasion .
