Bzhania, under pressure from the opposition, wrote a letter of resignation. The “Prime Minister” of the unrecognized republic also joined him. What led them to this was an attempt to accept an “investment agreement” with Russia.
The “president” of the unrecognized republic of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, said he was resigning amid protests over an “investment deal” with Russia. He announced this on the evening of Tuesday, November 19 on Telegram.
Bzhania said his decision was the result of long negotiations between the authorities and opposition forces, which brought thousands of people to the streets demanding change.
Along with the change of “president,” “Prime Minister” Alexander Ankvab also resigned.
Bzhania’s statement is due to be considered by the unrecognized republic’s parliament on Tuesday.
According to the agreement, the protesters are obliged to leave the complex of government buildings in Abkhazia by November 19. Otherwise, Bzhania’s letter of resignation will be withdrawn.
The acting head of the “republic” will be “Vice President” of Abkhazia Badra Gunba, and the position of the new head of government will be taken by “ex-Prime Minister” Valery Bganba.
We remind you that anti-Russian protests broke out in the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia, which is de facto the territory of Georgia. Thousands of opponents of the conclusion of an investment agreement with Russia came to the parliament building.
After this, Bzhania reportedly left Sukhumi after refusing to accept the opposition and resign.
