The ruling party in Germany proposes to go to new elections not with Olaf Scholz, but with Boris Pistorius.
Spiegel writes that Pistorius’s candidacy as a candidate for the new chancellor was first raised at a closed meeting of the influential SPD conservative group Seeheimer Kreis last week.
A number of Bundestag members said that the Minister of Defense is much more popular than the current Chancellor.
MP Jo Weingarten said Scholz’s reputation among Germans was “at rock bottom”.
And MP Christian Schreider stressed that he could no longer convince party members to participate in the election campaign for Scholz.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he was ready to hold a vote in parliament on a vote of confidence in his government earlier than January 15. First, the German Chancellor proposed scheduling a vote in the Bundestag for a vote of confidence in his government on January 15, and holding early elections in March.
However, the opposition, led by CDU/CSU leader Friedrich Merz, called for elections to be held on January 19. Voting for a vote of confidence is a necessary condition for this.
Early elections in Germany will take place as a result of the collapse of the coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the Free Democrats. It was provoked by the resignation of Finance Minister Lindner from the Free Democrats.
