Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya unexpectedly arrived in Kyiv today.
During the visit, the Japanese minister met with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrei Sibiga and President Vladimir Zelensky.
The Foreign Ministry reported that Sibiga and Iwaya agreed to increase sanctions pressure on Russia and work on subsequent liberalization of the visa regime.
The President of Ukraine said that this is Iwai’s first visit to another country immediately after the appointment of the new Japanese government.
This is both symbolic – in relation to our relations, Ukraine and Japan – and very practical: now this war in Europe decides a lot for the whole world,” Zelensky said in an address to Ukrainians on November 16.
Since the start of the full-scale war, Japan has helped Ukraine worth $12 billion.
Zelensky and the Japanese minister also discussed the fact that North Korea has become an accomplice of Russia and is helping Putin.
I informed about the activity of the North Korean military in the Kursk region, about all the threats to cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. Russia is teaching North Korea modern warfare, and this could cause wider destabilization. We must, together with all our other partners, oppose this,” the president said.
He also informed about a new support package from Japan and preparations for a conversation with the new Prime Minister of Japan Shigeru Ishiba.
