Local authorities have taken new measures to combat overtourism as the Italian government hosts a meeting of G7 tourism ministers in Florence.
The city hall of Florence, one of Italy’s most visited tourist destinations, has announced several bans aimed at controlling the flow of tourists. It was reported on Friday, November 15, by the Florence Daily News.
In particular, the city banned loudspeakers for tour guides that create too much noise and the use of boxes where Airbnb owners leave keys for guests.
Recently, such safe boxes have increasingly become targets of vandalism.
Restrictions will also be imposed on atypical vehicles, such as golf carts, which are often used by guides to take tourists to areas where vehicular traffic is restricted.
The Florence City Council explained that it aims to make the Tuscan capital a “living and unique city” for both visitors and residents.
Their report said the restrictions were due to an influx of travelers that had become unbearable for the locals.
It is known that in the first nine months of 2024, more than 7.8 million people visited Florence.
Authorities in the Spanish city of Barcelona have warned that by 2028 there will be a ban on renting apartments to tourists.
