The Ministry of Defense reform program aims to modernize the country’s Armed Forces by eliminating outdated structures and practices.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias on November 14 confirmed plans to close more than a hundred military bases across the country and move to “flexible units.” This was reported by Ekathimerini.
It was noted that the Ministry of Defense’s reform program aims to modernize the country’s Armed Forces by abandoning old structures and practices, as well as improving their ability to respond to modern challenges.
“We are moving forward with the closure of 137 bases, with the goal of completing it by 2025,” Dendias said in a briefing to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs.
He noted that it makes no sense for Greece to have 800 bases.
“But I know what it means to close the military bases, and I need support,” Dendias added, referring to the expected backlash against the plan, especially from lawmakers and local authorities in areas where where the local economy is highly dependent on the bases.
According to him, there are currently units in Euro that are less than 30% full, and one unit in the Peloponnese that is 130% full.
It was previously reported that Greece has prepared a plan for the restructuring of the Armed Forces by 2030. It includes, in particular, the acquisition of modern fighters and the strengthening of the navy.
We remind you that it is planned to build a naval base in Cyprus.
