Marine Le Pen and her fellow party members have been accused of fictitiously hiring parliamentary assistants in the European Parliament to steal money for the benefit of the party.
The Paris prosecutor’s office on Wednesday, November 13, requested that far-right Marine Le Pen be found guilty of financial fraud and embezzlement, sentenced to prison and banned from running for public office, including the presidency of France, in the future that’s five years, BFMTV reports.
It was noted that the prosecutor’s office is requesting to sentence the politician to five years in prison (two of which are suspended), and also to impose a fine of 300 thousand euros on him.
The prosecutor’s office requested such a punishment for Le Pen in a criminal case on the misuse of European Parliament funds. More than 20 representatives of the National Union are also involved in the case.
In addition, the prosecutor’s office is demanding a fine of two million euros for the National Rally party.
As BFMTV notes, if convicted by the court, Marine Le Pen will not be able to stand for election, even if she files a complaint against the decision. Marine Le Pen has previously said she intends to run for the French presidency in 2027.
Le Pen herself, commenting on the demands of the prosecutor’s office, said the prosecution was trying to destroy the party and “deprive the French of the opportunity to vote for who they want.”
Since the end of September, a court in Paris has considered a criminal case against Marine Le Pen and employees of the National Rally, accusing them of fictitiously hiring parliamentary assistants in the European Parliament to steal of money for the benefit of the party.
