The Archbishop of Canterbury has been accused of trying to cover up a 40-year-old story of abuse in the church.
The spiritual leader of the Church of England, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, announced his resignation on Tuesday after revelations that he failed to report sexual abuse cases to the police for years . This was reported by Reuters on Tuesday, November 12.
“Having received His Majesty the King’s kind permission, I have decided to step down,” Welby said in a statement. He explained that he would tell the exact time of departure later, as he had to resolve some work issues first.
The Archbishop took this step after learning that he and several other ministers of the Church did not send the police information about the sexual abuse cases of the lawyer John Smith. The victims of the lawyer’s claims are more than 100 boys and young people who attended “Christian children’s camps” in Africa and the UK in the 80s of the last century.
Welby did not deny that he had information about what was going on. According to him, he was confident that the investigators would be able to find the culprit without his help, so he did not intervene.
It was previously reported that the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, secretly worked in a London hospital during the quarantine.
