During the exercises, Russia taught the North Koreans artillery, basic infantry tactics and, above all, trench cleaning.
The Russian army has assembled a force of up to 50 thousand people for the operation in the Kursk region, confirmed American and Ukrainian officials. The New York Times reported this on Sunday, November 10.
The goal of the deal, which could begin in the coming days, is the restoration of control over the entire Kursk region of the Russian Federation.
The participation of the DPRK military in this offensive was confirmed by joint exercises with the Russian army west of Kursk, Ukrainian sources report.
Western and Ukrainian officials are calling the arrival of North Korean troops in the Kursk region a “major escalation.”
According to US officials, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops to fight in the Kursk region. The troops are dressed in Russian uniforms and equipped by Moscow but will likely fight in their own separate units, Pentagon officials said.
In the training, Russia teaches the North Koreans artillery, basic infantry tactics and, most importantly, trench cleaning, US officials said.
These preparations reportedly assumed that at least some North Korean forces would engage in frontal attacks on fortified Ukrainian defense positions. Experts suggest that North Korean troops are involved in light infantry, without armored vehicles, which could lead to significant losses in their ranks.
If the operation is successful, Russia may not stop at its border, but try to push Ukrainian troops back further. At the same time, some US officials believe that North Korea could order its troops to stop at the border even if Russian troops try to advance into Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that more than 3.7 thousand North Koreans who entered the territory of Russia indicated that the purpose of the trip was “studying”.
Previously, we wrote that the upper house of the Russian parliament on Wednesday, November 6, approved the law on the ratification of the agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and the DPRK, which was signed in Pyongyang on June 19.
