The US-Taiwan Relations Act does not provide for conventional diplomatic relations because of the disputed political status of the island state – China claims control over it.
Taiwan’s government secretly delivered a letter to newly elected US President Donald Trump, welcoming the island nation to his election. CNN reported this on Friday, November 8.
It has been suggested that the letter was given to a former Trump administration official at a private dinner.
“The secret delivery of this letter is in stark contrast to the phone call between Trump and the president of Taiwan after the 2016 election, which sent shockwaves around the world as it upended decades of established policy. of the US in Taiwan,” CNN wrote.
Journalists explained that for several decades, Washington’s policy was for US presidents not to hold talks with Taiwan because of the United States’ respect for the one-China policy.
They added that Taiwan and many other countries around the world are now turning to Trump differently than in the past. And the politician’s transition team is thinking more about the talks of the new head of the White House with world leaders during this transition.
Sources told CNN that Trump has not been in direct contact with the Taiwanese government since winning the presidential election. However, they said a call between Taiwan’s leader and Trump could still take place during the transition.
Let’s remember that Taiwan, threatened by China with military aggression, is trying to improve its defense capabilities.
Previously, China threatened to destroy Taiwan’s independence. According to the Chinese minister, the Chinese army will act “in the most decisive way” to prevent the independence of the island.
