The biggest concern is that Trump will try to shift the financial burden to Europe.
EU leaders at a meeting in Budapest on November 7 discussed the possibility of extending Ukraine’s military defense if Donald Trump decides to end US support. Bloomberg reported this, citing sources.
Among the discussions is whether the EU is ready to provide the necessary funds for military support for Kyiv.
According to one of the agency’s interlocutors, the biggest concern is that Trump will try to shift the financial burden to Europe. At the same time, none of the initial discussions indicated a radical change of course.
“If we talk about the possibility of peace today, it is because the Ukrainians have shown great courage and because the West has supported Ukraine. However, we will see how the scenario develops in the coming weeks,” said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to reporters upon arrival at the second day of the European leaders’ meeting on Friday, November 8.
According to some European officials, the real problems do not lie in the money itself, but in the available military resources, which mainly come from the United States. Others say leaders do not have that luxury and that the European Commission should draw up proposals for how the EU will respond to US aid withdrawal.
Trump has reportedly begun his first round of calls to European leaders.
According to a senior official briefed on the conversation, it was a discussion of how Trump might approach negotiations with Putin. Trump has made it clear that he realizes that he cannot simply force Ukraine to make concessions to Putin without giving anything in return.
Let’s remember that during the election campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to quickly end the war in Ukraine.
After becoming US President, Trump has said that he is not ruling out the possibility of continuing talks with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
