43 rhesus macaques escaped in South Carolina – police said the animals were harmless, but asked to keep the door closed.
43 rhesus macaques escaped from the Alpha Genesis research center in Yemassee, South Carolina, due to the negligence of a new employee who did not lock the primate enclosure, the AP reports.
Yemassee Police Chief Gregory Alexander said “the risk is minimal,” because the animals do not carry dangerous diseases and behave peacefully, although they can be frightened. Therefore, police are urging residents to keep doors and windows closed and not try to interact with the monkeys.
The police department’s statement also said Alpha Genesis officers were monitoring the primates and trying to lure them with food to return them to the enclosure. Residents are advised to report any monkey sightings by calling 911.
It was previously reported that a female Sumatran orangutan named Tua gave birth to a baby in an American zoo.
