The bodies of 563 fallen defenders were returned to Ukraine. This was announced by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War on Friday, November 8.
“We were able to return 320 corpses of those killed in the Donetsk direction and 89 fallen soldiers from the Bakhmut direction. We were also able to return 154 corpses from morgues in the Russian Federation,” the message said.
The repatriation was carried out thanks to the coordination of the Coordination Headquarters of the SBU, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other structures of the Security and Defense Sector. of Ukraine.
The headquarters also expressed gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross for assistance in repatriation.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces will transfer the repatriated bodies and stay in designated government facilities. Representatives of law enforcement agencies and forensic experts will establish the victims’ identities, the Coordination Headquarters added.
Ukraine and Russia regularly exchange military bodies. The last time such an exchange took place was on October 18. Then they were able to return the body of the 501st defender. During two years of work, the bodies of more than 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers could be brought home.
