The former People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VI convocation from the Party of Regions and the former head of the public security police and deputy commander of the Kyiv Berkut were sentenced to 5 years in prison. Former law enforcement officers were also stripped of the special rank of “police colonel.” The Office of the Prosecutor General announced this on November 5.
The court found that the defendants were guilty of abuse of power and official authority, accompanied by violence, incitement of national hatred, hatred and humiliation of national honor and dignity.
Prosecutors proved in court that the former representative of the people in April 2010, in the Ukrainian House in Kyiv, organized and supervised an exhibition of photographs and documents called Volyn massacre – Polish and Jewish victims of the OUN-UPA. Its purpose is to incite national hatred and hatred. When visitors to the exhibition tried to express their civic position regarding the course of these historical events, the former representative of the people called on law enforcement officials to use physical violence against them. At the same time, he insulted the sentiments of the citizens because of their ideological beliefs.
Carrying out calls from the representative of the people, police officers, exceeding the authority granted to them and using violence, caused bodily harm to individual citizens. They illegally detained 13 people. Protocols were drawn up against detainees for allegedly committing administrative offenses. Later, the court found all the detainees innocent.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, due to the long-term hiding of the convicts from the investigative authorities and courts in the territory of the aggressor state and temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine, the trial against them was conducted according to the procedure in absentia .
It is known that these law enforcement officers are also being brought to justice in another criminal trial – for committing some serious and especially serious crimes during the mass protests of 2013-2014. The trial is currently ongoing.
Let’s remember that in Ukraine, property worth more than 1 billion hryvnias, belonging to a former representative of the people’s region, who was a confidant of the fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych, was seized.
