The attackers stole two portraits of queens – the late British Elizabeth II and the former Danish Margrethe II.
In the Dutch city of Oosterwijk, unknown persons blew open the doors of the MPV art gallery and stole two works by pop art founder Andy Wargol. The Associated Press reported this on Friday, November 1.
The attackers, using explosives, blew open the doors of the gallery and stole two portraits of the queens – the late British Elizabeth II and the former Danish Margrethe II.
The shock wave was so strong that it broke the windows of adjacent shops. Thieves took Andy Wargol’s four portraits from the Queen’s Regnant Series, which include portraits of former queens Elizabeth II of Great Britain, Beatrix of the Netherlands, Margrethe II of Denmark and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland.
According to gallery owner Mark Piet Visser, the attackers cut the paintings out of the frames and fled in a car. Two paintings – Twala’s Ntombi and Beatrix – were removed from the wall but left untouched due to transport difficulties.
Law enforcement in Wolvensteg found the car in which the attackers fled and likely contained explosives. An investigation was launched.

The Queen’s Regnant Series was created by Wargol in 1985 and consists of 40 engravings. The MPV Gallery owns a unique collection – all four paintings are from one set.
Let’s remember that earlier in Britain, environmental activists were arrested for spilling soup on a Van Gogh painting.
