Four out of five special forces brigades suffered serious losses before the end of summer 2022. It will take up to ten years to restore the special forces to pre-war levels in Russia.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces inflicted “crushing losses” on elite Russian special forces, especially during the 2022 counteroffensive. The National Interest reported this on Thursday, October 31, citing a leak of Pentagon data and a report from the US Air Force.
The publication states that the secret documents, which were leaked by a US Air National Guard pilot in April 2023, contain the Pentagon’s assessments of the course of a large-scale war, its participants, as well as data on Russian special forces units. According to this information, Russian special forces appeared in all important battles, including Mariupol, Kherson, Liman, Kharkov, Kyiv and the Donetsk direction.
According to the Pentagon, four out of five special forces brigades will experience serious losses before the end of the summer of 2022. The Defense Intelligence Agency estimates that one brigade has 125 soldiers left out of 900. A unit that has lost 90% of its men were deemed ineffective and withdrawn from the battlefield.
It was reported that during the counter-offensive, the Ukrainian Armed Forces “caught by surprise” the third guard brigade of the Russian special intelligence unit. The invaders had to defend themselves at Liman, losing up to 75% of their men.
The publication states that elite forces cannot be replaced in the shortest possible time. And now it could take Moscow up to a decade to restore its special forces to prewar capabilities, a critical setback to Russia’s strategic special operations capabilities against nearby adversaries.
Let’s recall that, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the total loss of enemy combat since the beginning of a full-scale war amounted to approximately 694,950 people.
