Currently, the methods of patrolling a section of the border will be determined by the commanders of the Indian and Chinese military units responsible for these sections of the border.
India and China have completed the withdrawal of military troops and equipment from the disputed Ladakh region in the Himalayas, officially ending a four-year standoff. Currently, the parties are checking the demarcation line and preparing for further patrols. This was reported by Hindustan Times on Thursday, October 31.
The final verification is being carried out in accordance with the agreement reached by India and China on October 21 to reduce border tensions.
The parties conduct a joint verification of the withdrawal of troops and military equipment at an agreed distance from the demarcation line, after which they begin patrolling their borders.
“The separation has been completed and verification is underway. Further negotiations will continue at the level of local commanders. The two armies are expected to start patrolling these areas soon,” the Indian official said.
As part of the divorce, effective October 23, the Indian and Chinese militaries withdrew their advanced units and equipment from the Depsang and Demchok areas and dismantled temporary structures erected after the outbreak of military confrontation in May 2020.
The situation on the ground has been restored to pre-conflict levels and the Indian Army will now once again be able to patrol border areas where it has not been able to for the past four years due to the presence of Chinese troops.
Currently, the methods of patrolling a section of the border will be determined by the commanders of the Indian and Chinese military units responsible for these sections of the border.
Let’s recall that Xi Jinping and Modi held their first official negotiations in five years, agreeing to resolve territorial disputes.
Relations between the two regions have remained tense since 2020, when clashes between their militaries along a disputed border in the western Himalayas left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead. Then there was also a massive fight between the border patrols of India and China. About 150 people took part in the massacre. 13 soldiers were injured.
Over the past four years, neighboring countries have deployed tens of thousands of troops and heavy weapons along the disputed border.
Since the deadly incident, Xi and Modi have not held bilateral talks, although both have participated in several multilateral events. Their last official negotiations took place in October 2019 in India.
