By the end of the decade, Australia could produce up to 4,000 GMLRS per year, as well as up to 100,000 artillery shells.
The Minister of Defense Industry of Australia Pat Conroy on October 30 announced a new program for the production of projectiles in the country. The Australian government is investing A$21 billion (US$14 billion) over the next decade to increase domestic production of various types of projectiles. Bloomberg reported this.
It is proposed to build a new plant for the production of 155 mm artillery shells and guided missiles (GMLRS) in Australia in partnership with the American company Lockheed Martin.
By the end of the decade, Australia could produce up to 4,000 GMLRS per year, as well as up to 100,000 artillery shells.
Conroy said Australia was on the cusp of a new missile era in the Indo-Pacific region.
“In addition to getting more rounds from our partners, we need to build a new Australian guided weapons industry,” he said.
Let’s recall that Australia entered into an agreement with the United States to purchase Standard Missile long-range surface-to-air guided missiles for $4.7 billion.
It has also been reported that Australia will transfer 49 obsolete M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package worth $245 million.
