In the Ternopil region, eight children and one adult were poisoned by mushrooms.
The press service of the State Emergency Service reported this today, October 30.
It is noted that today seven minor children from the same family were hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Ternopil Regional Children’s Hospital with a diagnosis of mushroom poisoning.
All of them are residents of the Chertkovsky district. Six were in serious condition, and one, a one-year-old, was in satisfactory condition. The children consumed wild mushrooms, the Ministry of Health said.
A few hours later, two hospitalized people (born in 2007 and 2021) were transported to a medical facility in Lvov, five more (born in 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2020) were transported to Okhmatdyt.
Another child, who was visiting the family, was transported to the Ternopil Regional Children’s Hospital; he is in serious condition. One adult was also injured after feeding mushrooms to children. This is a man born in 1965. He was hospitalized in serious condition in one of the city hospitals, the Ministry of Health noted.
The Ministry of Health notes that the safest thing is to avoid consuming wild mushrooms.
It is best to consume those grown industrially, the department noted.
In case of suspected mushroom poisoning, the ministry recommends taking the following actions:
- immediately call 103 or 112;
- rinse the stomach with clean water (drink 1-2 liters of warm boiled water, induce vomiting. This procedure should be repeated several times until clean water returns instead of the contents of the stomach);
- take sorbents (activated carbon) and stay in bed;
- do not drink alcohol or any food – this can speed up the absorption of toxins into the body.
