The European Commission criticized the United News telethon. The EC believes that Ukraine should work to restore a pluralistic media landscape.
This is indicated in the European Commission report analyzing the progress of candidate states for accession to the European Union.
In 2023, the Ukrainian government invested public funds in the telethon project. It should be re-evaluated whether this is the best platform for the free exchange of views between Ukrainians, the report says.
The report also drew attention to the work of the parliamentary TV channel “Rada”.
The main task of the parliamentary media channel should be to disseminate information about parliamentary activities, including the work of representatives of the parliamentary opposition, the European Commission notes.
In general, regarding the issue of the media, the EC noted that next year Ukraine needs:
- ensure the safety and independence of journalists and respect for their role in informing the public. Promptly investigate all cases of intimidation and harassment of journalists;
- ensure adequate funding for the public broadcaster, which would allow independent public media to fulfill their role as enshrined in Ukrainian legislation;
- continue efforts to support and gradually restore a “transparent, pluralistic and independent media landscape”, ensuring that restrictions imposed for security reasons respect key public rights and interests, such as access to information and media freedom.
