Chinese hackers used data from the phones of Trump, Vance, people from Kamala Harris’ headquarters and other officials.
China-linked hacker group Salt Typhoon may have accessed phone conversations between presidential candidate Donald Trump and his vice presidential running mate, JD Vence. The New York Times reported this on Friday, October 25.
Also, the Chinese hackers could hear people from the headquarters of the US Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris and other officials.
This week, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) told the Trump campaign that he and Vance were among people whose phone numbers were targeted by hackers. The hackers may still be in Verizon’s systems, but it’s unclear if they’re still trying to obtain data.
Investigators are working to determine what data the hackers may have obtained. However, they are already very concerned about the potential volume of compromised data and the wide range of possible victims.
“Information on the phones used by the presidential candidate and his deputy could be a goldmine for Chinese intelligence services: who they call and text, how often they talk to certain people and how long they talk to them , if hackers can track them in real time,” the material said.
It is not yet known if the hackers obtained phone records and text messages. It largely depends on what messaging programs the victims used and how that data moved through the phone company’s systems.
China has previously used spy balloons as part of an extensive surveillance program. In particular, Beijing has collected data on countries of strategic interest to it.
