North Korea has already provided Russia with more weapons than European intelligence agencies previously estimated.
North Korea is preparing to send its second batch of troops to Russia. Bloomberg reported this on Friday, October 25, citing South Korean intelligence documents shared with allies and analyzed by the publication.
It is known that the first group of 1,500 elite special forces is undergoing training in the Russian Far East as part of the planned deployment of approximately 10,000 North Korean soldiers. They were delivered to the port of Vladivostok between 8 and 13 October.
According to the documents, North Korean troops are expected to be sent to the front lines of Russia’s war in Ukraine after completing nearly a month of training at military facilities in Vladivostok, Ussuriysk, Khabarovsk and Blagoveshchensk. The Kremlin plans to arm North Koreans with weapons and combat uniforms, as well as fake IDs to pass them off as residents of Russia’s eastern region.
The documents also set out details of the scale of arms supplies from North Korea to Russia.
Pyongyang has shipped about eight million North Korean-made 122mm and 152mm shells since August last year, according to the analysis. Also, about 100 Hwasong-11 missiles, as well as Bulsae-4 anti-tank weapons, were discovered for the first time on the battlefield in Ukraine.
According to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, this is more than previously believed by European intelligence estimates.
Earlier this week, South Korea shared its findings with its allies. Seoul will also present some knowledge to NATO officials at a North Atlantic Council meeting on Monday, the sources said.
Options for a potential NATO response are limited, but could include increased support for Ukraine and development of partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region, interlocutors said.
The previous day, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin confirmed the presence of North Korean troops in Russia. At the same time, he referred to the fourth paragraph of the agreement between North Korea and the Russian Federation, which states that if one of the parties finds itself in a state of war due to an armed attack, the the other party will immediately provide military assistance in every way at its disposal.
