The head of state said that among the Serbian population support for the idea of joining BRICS is growing, and now an equal number of Serbs want to join this bloc and the EU – 42% each.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said his country may abandon its intentions to join the European Union and instead become a member of the BRICS bloc. His words on Friday, October 25, were quoted by The Times.
The publication notes that Belgrade has long been balancing between East and West, but the war in Ukraine is forcing the world to choose a side, and in the case of Serbia, the scales have tipped more towards the Kremlin.
Vucic said that among the Serbian population support for the idea of joining BRICS is growing, because the member countries of this bloc “blackmail us less” than the EU. According to him, BRICS and the EU now want an equal number of Serbs – 42% each.
“When in two and a half years people vote for a new president, this will be one of the main topics. Who knows, maybe it will be a point for a referendum,” said Vucic.
The publication recalls that this week, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Serbian government Alexander Vulin attended the BRICS summit in Kazan together with the ministers of defense and economy of Serbia. During the summit, he met with the leaders of China, Belarus, Venezuela and Egypt and said in comments to Russian media that he hoped Belgrade would join this bloc.
It was also noted that the evidence of Belgrade’s turn towards Moscow could be a change in the country’s policy towards Russian emigrants living in Serbia. According to Russian oppositionist Pyotr Nikitin, who also took refuge in this country, recently Russian citizens expressing anti-war or anti-Putin views have been expelled from Serbia.
We remind you that Vučić himself did not go to the BRICS summit because of other meetings planned, as well as “because of various things known to Putin.”
