German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected the idea of inviting Ukraine to NATO.
He stated this in an interview with ZDF.
We made a decision in Washington and Vilnius and outlined the prospects. But I believe that for now there is no need for any new decisions outside of this decision,” he said.
Scholz emphasized that “a country at war cannot become a member of NATO.”
Everyone knows this, there is no disagreement with this. And an invitation to join NATO is usually pretty quickly linked to membership,” he added.
According to him, this issue is not even on the agenda now. Rather, we are talking about “discussing the issue of security guarantees in the post-war situation,” Scholz emphasized.
Scholz stressed that a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine requires “calibrated actions” that, on the one hand, guarantee support for Ukraine, and on the other hand, ensure that it does not turn into a war between Russia and NATO.
“I understand this very clearly and will not change my position,” he said.
Regarding the delivery of German Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, Scholz noted:
My opinion is clear. I think this is wrong.
According to him, Germany will not supply weapons that will “contribute to escalation.”
Let us remind you that the imminent invitation of Ukraine to NATO is the first point of the “victory plan” recently presented by Vladimir Zelensky.
