Parliamentary elections in Georgia will be held on October 26, 2024. They will be held using an exclusive proportional system with a passing threshold of 5%.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili believes she could be arrested if the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party wins the parliamentary elections. Mtavari reported this on Thursday, October 24.
“If this happens, I will probably be impeached and imprisoned,” Zurabishvili responded.
It is known that last year they wanted to impeach Zurabishvili because he made foreign trips to Europe without the government’s permission, as stated in the constitution.
The Constitutional Court of Georgia allowed the impeachment procedure to begin. But there are not enough votes in parliament for such a move. At least 100 representatives had to vote for the initiative, but in total there were only 86 votes.
The head of the Georgian parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, said that “at the very first meetings of the new assembly” the impeachment of Zurabishvili will be initiated.
Earlier, the US State Department emphasized that the Russian Federation is involving Georgia in the war against Ukraine, which is planning to build a naval base in occupied Abkhazia.
