In recent days, Russian troops have made significant tactical advances in Selidovo, Donetsk region, which could force Ukrainian forces to leave the town soon.
Analysts of the ISW (Institute for the Study of War) state that in recent days, Russian troops have achieved significant tactical victories in Selidovo, Donetsk region and its surroundings. Losing control of Selidovo creates a new, another springboard for future attacks by Russian invaders towards Pokrovsk.
Fierce fight
Military experts believe that in the near future Ukrainian troops will be forced to withdraw from Selidovo due to the threat of encirclement. Russian channels posted videos of the raising of the Russian flag on one of the city’s tallest buildings.
Ukrainian public pages also report about the difficult situation in the Selidovo area and street fighting “The enemy is successful in the center. The invaders entered Selidovo in full platoon. FPV drone crews are working of 100+ sorties a day against the enemy’s infantry, but still could not withstand such a flow. The enemy successfully penetrated and dispersed the houses and bunkers,” wrote the War Facts telegram channel.
“The Russian offensive in Selidovo, as well as the captured territories south and north of the city, may soon force Ukrainian troops to withdraw from the area to avoid being trapped,” the ISW report said. .
According to the Ukrainian defenders, the battle is already taking place in the streets of the city, the invaders are “entering in whole platoons.” Fpv drone crews make 100+ sorties a day, mostly against enemy infantry.
House target – Pokrovsk
Selidovo is a small town south-southeast of Pokrovsk, which is the main target of the Russian group operating in Donbass. It is located in a low area, and its capture does not provide any special advantages for building an offensive.
However, for Russian units advancing on Pokrovsk in the north, from the side of Grodovka and Novogrodovka captured in August–September, Selidovo poses a threat – from there the Ukrainian Armed Forces can launch a dangerous counterattack on the side, and this factor significantly impeded the advance of the Russian army in the main direction of Pokrovsk.
The Institute for the Study of War believes that the defense of Selidovo completed its main task – it delayed the Russian offensive, depleted Russian forces and gave Ukrainian troops time to strengthen the defense of Pokrovsk. The attempt to capture Selidovo made it impossible for the invaders to maintain their significant offensive directly towards Pokrovsk.
At the same time, the Russian army continues to attack in nearby directions – in particular, in the area of Tsukurino and the village of Gornyak south of Selidovo. There are also important strongholds of the Armed Forces of Ukraine that impede the rapid advance of the Russians.
