Party members pressured Trudeau to resign

The prime minister of Canada, because of his extremely low personal rating, could cause the party to lose the election in an embarrassing way.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday, October 23, met with 20 party members from the Liberal Party, who essentially gave him an ultimatum: resign voluntarily, or risk provoking a rebellion within faction. The Guardian writes about it.

Two dozen lawmakers also signed a letter calling on Trudeau to make a decision by Oct. 28, but did not specify any clear consequences.

The Liberal Party has 153 MPs, suggesting that the rebellion does not have broad support among members of the prime minister’s party. As questions about Trudeau’s political future mount, no alternative party leader has spoken out against him.

The publication recalls that in his ninth year as Prime Minister, Trudeau was unpopular. Lawmakers calling on him to resign hope to be spared a humiliating election defeat that could relegate the party to third place.

The CBC Poll Tracker shows the opposition Conservatives have a nearly 20% lead over the governing Liberals.

The results of two midterm elections this summer have given disaffected lawmakers more reason to doubt the future of Trudeau’s tenure as leader, with the party suffering losses in some constituencies where there were advantage the Liberals have had for decades.

The losses reflect a significant drop in voter support for the Trudeau government: the cost of living has risen sharply along with a housing shortage, and political failures and poor governance have weakened strong support. for immigration.

However, Trudeau has said he intends to fight and win the next federal election, which will take place before the fall of 2025.

After a three-hour meeting on Wednesday, officials reiterated their support for the prime minister. Other MPs suggested Trudeau would retain the party’s credibility if he and his inner circle made significant changes to the way they conduct policy, including communications.

Trudeau kept his mouth shut after the caucus meeting. All he told reporters was “The Liberal Party is strong and united.”

Last month, Justin Trudeau easily avoided a vote of no confidence after his main political rival failed to secure enough votes to end nine years of Liberal Party leadership.

In the same month, he received a blow from his coalition partner: the New Democratic Party terminated the 2022 agreement.

Let’s remember that in 2021, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party won early parliamentary elections.
