In addition to the USA, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia, three more “non-obvious” countries will contest Ukraine’s invitation.

The United States and Germany are not the only Alliance members against Ukraine’s immediate invitation to NATO. Politico wrote this on Wednesday, October 23, citing its own sources in the US and NATO leadership.

According to the publication, there are at least five more NATO states that are not ready to contribute to the implementation of the first point of the Victory Plan presented by President Vladimir Zelensky – the immediate invitation of Ukraine to NATO.

It is noted that Hungary and Slovakia are also fighting, but they are coming from a different starting point. Their current populist leaders are pro-Kremlin: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked EU funds for Ukrainian arms and withdrew from the NATO lethal aid program for Kyiv.

Another three, as Politico’s interlocutors say, are “doubting and hiding behind the United States and Germany.” We are talking about Belgium, Slovenia and Spain. Their leaders “are likely to support the idea as long as it has abstract outlines, but will become increasingly resistant as the invitation becomes a more concrete prospect.”

However, officials who spoke to Politico were keen to emphasize that neither the US nor Germany is ruling out Ukraine’s possible entry into the alliance.

Meanwhile, the French newspaper Le Monde reported last week that US authorities are no longer opposed to inviting Ukraine to NATO.

And President Vladimir Zelensky said Germany softened the skepticism about Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
