Gates has stayed out of political affairs for decades, so his donation must remain secret. He did not publicly support Harris, but in private conversations he said that he was concerned about the prospect of a second presidency of Donald Trump.
In a conversation with reporters, the billionaire emphasized his bipartisanship and said that “this election is different,” but said nothing about the donation. At the same time, his two children have long been donors to the Democratic Party and, as the NYT writes, they make donations from their father’s money.
NYT writes that Gates donated through the Future Forward organization, which accepts donations for Kamala Harris’ election campaign. Future Forward never discloses the names of its donors, so Gates’ name likely won’t appear on the company’s public records. Although he himself, in private conversations with former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, confirmed the donation precisely because of Future Forward.
