The Russian Federation is helping North Korea circumvent sanctions and “strengthen” its nuclear potential, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate said.
North Korea has given Russia missiles and men for its war against Ukraine in exchange for tactical nuclear weapon technology. This was said by the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense, Kirill Budanov, reports The Economist.
North Korea does not give its people or weapons to Russia for charitable purposes. Therefore, the expansion of cooperation should be seen as a result of a mutual assistance agreement signed by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang in June 2024, the journalists said.
The head of the GUR describes the secret provisions of the agreement as a quid pro quo: Russian money and know-how in exchange for Koreans and missiles. Russia is helping North Korea evade sanctions and boost its nuclear capabilities.
Budanov believes that the Russian Federation is transferring to the DPRK some technologies for low-power tactical nuclear weapons and underwater missile launch systems.
Earlier, Kirill Budanov said that about 11 thousand North Korean infantrymen are being trained in eastern Russia and will be sent to the war against Ukraine.
Budanov announced the date of arrival of North Korean soldiers
