Russia will retain 43 of its employees after the expulsion. While Bulgaria has only 12 diplomatic staff in Moscow.
Bulgaria fired 70 employees of the Russian embassy. Two planes flew in from Sofia along with dozens of employees of diplomatic services and their families, the AP reported on the eve.
The decision to oust was announced on 28 June by acting Prime Minister Kirill Petkov.
He said Moscow had used hybrid warfare tactics to overthrow his government. Petkov also mentioned that Russia would retain 43 of its employees after the expulsion, and stressed that Bulgaria has only 12 diplomatic employees in Moscow.
“All those working against the interests of Bulgaria will be called to return to their country of origin,” he said.
In response, Russia threatened to sever diplomatic relations with Bulgaria. Moscow demanded that Sofia cancel the decision to declare dozens of diplomats persona non grata.
