The European Council at the summit in Brussels on June 23, 2022 granted Ukraine EU candidate status. Kyiv has promised to carry out a number of important reforms, particularly related to the rule of law, oligarchs and corruption.
The European Commission will give its annual assessment of the progress of countries seeking membership in the European Union (EU) on 30 October. In particular, this applies to Ukraine. European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova said this to Suspilny on Friday, October 18.
Among other things, he pointed out the role of the media in civil society and noted that they play a big role in the fight against corruption and disinformation.
Maternova noted that since the beginning of Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine, the EU has spent around 15 million euros to support nearly 15 media outlets engaged in fact-checking related to corruption and abuse.
“I think the situation in Ukraine is special because there is not enough money that you are fighting a war, and it costs many lives, as well as money,” said the ambassador.
Maternova said that she personally participated in seminars for regional media, where journalists were taught. According to him, independent media and their support play an important role in the process of European integration of Ukraine.
“That is, in less than two weeks we will see the 2024 edition of the so-called enlargement package. It is an annual assessment of the progress of the European Commission, which evaluates the countries applying for membership of the EU.” said the ambassador.
The European Commission said that there is a real hope of opening negotiations on the accession of Ukraine to the EU in the winter.
