Ukraine returns 95 defenders from captivity

Many of those released had serious illnesses and the effects of severe injuries, as well as significant weight loss due to torture and malnutrition.

Ukraine conducted an exchange of prisoners of war on the Russian side, as a result of which 95 Ukrainian soldiers returned home. This was announced by the Coordination Headquarters and President Vladimir Zelensky on Friday, October 18.

Among those who returned home were 69 soldiers and sergeants and 26 officers.

Liberated soldiers defended Mariupol and Azovstal, Donbass, Luhansk region, Kharkov region, Kiev region, Chernihiv region, Kherson region. These are National Guardsmen, sailors, soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, border guards and representatives of other units of the Security and Defense Forces, said the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

The peculiarity of this exchange is that many Ukrainians who received illegal sentences and were “sentenced” are returning home: 28 defenders for a long time, and 20 in life imprisonment.

It was previously reported that human rights activist, journalist, public figure and military man Maxim Butkevich has been released from Russian captivity.

During the full-scale war, Ukraine freed 3,135 people from Russian captivity, about one-third of whom were registered as missing.
