Ukraine did not receive what was promised for the abandonment of nuclear weapons, because the countries that signed the Budapest Memorandum did not stop Russia.
Ukraine chooses to be in NATO, it is better than nuclear weapons. President Vladimir Zelensky said this in a conversation with journalists from Ukrainian television channels on Friday, October 18.
“As for nuclear weapons, first, we do not intend to create any threat to the world and use nuclear weapons,” the head of state said.
Zelensky noted that in this way some media outlets made an “information dump.”
I want us to understand each other correctly. I believe that Ukraine should be in NATO, and the argument is that during the Budapest Memorandum we gave away nuclear weapons and guaranteed security and territorial integrity. We are talking about the fact that if Ukraine does not give up nuclear weapons, this will be the umbrella that other nuclear states have. Of course, if you are not in NATO. NATO is better than any type of weapon,” the president emphasized.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine did not receive what was promised for the abandonment of nuclear weapons, because the countries that were signatories of the Budapest Memorandum did not stop Russia, thereby violating the norms of the document.
According to him, the memorandum was violated by both partners in 2014.
“If you look at all the countries in the world where there are no wars, they are NATO countries, or countries with equally powerful and dangerous weapons… Of the options that are now on the table, the realistic is NATO membership,” added the president.
Let’s remember that on October 17, the tabloid Bild wrote that the Ukrainian authorities seem to be “seriously thinking” about restoring nuclear weapons. On the same day, Zelensky said that Ukraine is preparing to create nuclear weapons.
