The initiative could provide more effective monitoring of North Korea, free from attempts by Moscow and Beijing to reduce Pyongyang’s suspicions of evading sanctions from the world body.
The United States, South Korea and Japan announced the creation of a new multinational group to monitor compliance with sanctions against North Korea. Reuters wrote this on Wednesday, October 16.
A mechanism called the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Group was introduced in March this year. This came after Moscow rejected the annual renewal of the UN panel of experts that for the past 15 years has overseen the implementation of sanctions aimed at curbing North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. China then abstained from voting.
The group will continue the work of the UN group, including preparing regular reports on sanctions compliance, the South Korean official said. Eight other countries will participate, including the UK, France and Germany.
“There are many discussions about how to develop an effective monitoring system that can replace the UN panel, but even during this process, cases of violations of sanctions by North Korea continue to occur, so “We have decided that we must not delay any longer and must complete this gap quickly,” said South Korean Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Hong-kyun.
He added that while the allies will continue to look for ways to update the UN framework, the team is open to any countries willing to help ensure the sanctions are implemented.
Earlier it became known that the Russians began to form the so-called “special Buryat battalion” based on the 11th separate air assault brigade of the occupation army of the Russian Federation. It will be staffed by North Korean citizens.
As you know, North Korea is threatening a “terrible catastrophe” due to the alleged flight of South Korean drones over Pyongyang. In response, South Korea warned that North Korea would see “the end of its regime” if it caused any harm to its people.
