Russian authorities are seeking help from “friendly” countries in organizing domestic passenger flights due to the threat of a shortage of aircraft from their carriers.
The Russian Ministry of Transport is negotiating to attract Kazakh airlines to flights within Russia, the Moscow Times reports, citing the head of the department, Roman Starovoit.
According to him, we are talking about so-called cabotage transportation, when a foreign airline flies between populated areas of another country. In Russia, only Russian air carriers currently have this right.
The possibility of allowing cabotage transportation is being considered against the backdrop of a shortage of aircraft fleet, Starovoit said.
He added that negotiations are also underway with other countries, but did not name them.
Before the start of a full-scale war against Ukraine, the fleet of Russian airlines consisted of 850 aircraft, and by the beginning of 2023 it had been reduced to 736 aircraft, according to estimates from the consulting company Oliver Wyman.
Due to sanctions prohibiting the supply of Western aircraft and spare parts to the Russian Federation, according to OW forecasts, by 2026 the number of available aircraft may be halved.
