Donald Trump, a US presidential candidate, refused to confirm or deny reports of phone calls with Vladimir Putin after leaving the White House in 2021.
Well, I don’t comment on it, but I will tell you this: if I did it, then it was a reasonable thing to do. If I’m friends with people, if I can communicate with people, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing, from a government perspective,” Trump responded in a speech at the Chicago Economic Forum.
The fact that Trump maintains warm relations with Putin and called him on the phone at the beginning of the year was written by Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward in his book “War.”
In the book, the author mentions that in 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Trump secretly sent a batch of tests to Putin for his personal use. And Putin appreciated this gesture.
Four years later, the personal relationship between the two men appears to have survived. In early 2024, the former president ordered an aide to leave his office at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida to have a private phone call with the Russian leader, Woodward writes.
An unnamed Trump aide told the reporter that Trump has spoken with Putin at least seven times since leaving the White House in 2021.
Donald Trump’s campaign criticized Woodward’s book.
Chief of Staff Stephen Chung said that “none of Bob Woodward’s fictional stories are true” and the book’s place was “in a discount store where it could be used as toilet paper.”
The Kremlin has confirmed that former US President Donald Trump sent Covid-19 testing equipment while in office at the height of the pandemic. Bloomberg wrote that Kremlin Speaker Dmitry Peskov said the tests had been sent, but denied a claim in a book by journalist Bob Woodward that Trump and Putin spoke on the phone several times after Trump left office.
Peskov called Woodward’s statements about contacts between politicians “typical election propaganda.” In contrast, the Trump campaign did not directly refute the information about the phone calls to Moscow, but called the author “really crazy.”
