France, like Germany, had to cut spending in an attempt to reduce its budget deficit.
Due to the budget deficit, France this year will not fulfill its original plan for the amount of military aid to Ukraine and will still not reach the 3 billion euro mark. This was said by Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu, writes Politico.
French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to increase military aid for Ukraine to 3 billion euros. The figure “up to 3 billion euros” appeared, in particular, in the bilateral security agreement.
“At the beginning of 2024, we made a political decision that aid could reach 3 billion euros. In practice, we will exceed 2 billion, but not reach 3 billion euros,” said Lecornu.
France, like Germany, has had to cut spending in an attempt to reduce a budget deficit that could reach 6% of its GDP by 2024.
According to Lecornu, about 300 million euros of military aid for Ukraine is paid for by proceeds from Russian fixed assets. These funds will be used to purchase 155 mm artillery shells, Caesar self-propelled guns and fuel. 400-600 million will generate lower inflation rates and will be used to modernize SCALP and Aster missiles for Ukraine.
As previously reported, France will soon train and fully equip the Ukrainian brigade.
