Britain expressed the hope that after the election Georgia would return to a pro-Western course, which would allow the restoration of trust and cooperation between the countries.
The UK has decided to temporarily stop the annual Ministerial-level Wardrop Dialogue format with Georgia, as well as cancel negotiations between the heads of the defense departments of both countries. British Ambassador to Georgia Gareth Ward announced this in a comment to IPN.
In addition, the implementation of a new cybersecurity program has been suspended.
Ward said the decision was made due to concerns about democracy in Georgia and the spread of anti-Western rhetoric by the current government.
The ambassador hopes that after the elections Georgia will return to a pro-Western course, which will allow for the restoration of trust and cooperation between the countries.
The Wardrop Dialogue began operating in 2014 and is named after Oliver Wardrop, the first British High Commissioner to Georgia in 1919-1921.
Let’s recall that earlier the European Union decided to stop high-level meetings with representatives of the Georgian government in response to anti-European actions and rhetoric of the ruling party.
Earlier it was reported that the Georgian parliament supported in the first reading a package of laws restricting the rights of LGBT people, despite the fact that the day before it was criticized by the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.
As you know, in September the Georgian parliament adopted the so-called anti-LGBT package of laws and amendments in the third final reading.
