The fifth test launch of the SpaceX spacecraft was successful.
On October 13, the first stage of the rocket was successfully caught for the first time – it landed on the launch pad in Texas, where it was caught using a special device. This had failed in previous tests, with the rocket either crashing or not returning as planned.
The rocket launched from the SpaceX launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas. At an altitude of about 70 km, the first stage of the rocket separated to return to Earth.
The Super Heavy carrier successfully landed on the launch pad, where it was captured by the launch tower using the Mechazilla system.
The successful landing of the Super Heavy launch vehicle is considered the most important achievement for the creation of a fully reusable rocket for missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond.
Starship was successfully launched in the Indian Ocean, SpaceX reported.
Eyeliner confirmed! Congratulations to the entire SpaceX team on the exciting fifth test flight of Starship! – the company said in a message on platform X.
During the first test in April 2023, the entire missile system exploded just minutes after launch.
During the second test in November 2023, the two stages of the rocket separated and the upper one continued to fly, but soon both exploded separately.
During the third test in March, Starship reached space for the first time, but also failed to complete the flight.
On the fourth test flight in June, the spacecraft made its first controlled landing, but it didn’t go as expected.
