The US will deploy THAAD missile defense systems in Israel to intercept ballistic missiles in the event of another Iranian attack.
This was reported by Israeli Channel 12.
At the same time, Axios, citing a representative of the American defense department, reports that the final decision on the deployment of the THAAD system in Israel has not yet been made.
The main important characteristic of the THAAD complex is that it is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at a range of up to 200 km and at an altitude of 100-150 km. The anti-missile missile of this complex has a launch mass of 900 kg, a body length of 6.1 meters and a flight speed of 8.2 Mach; the target is hit through direct kinetic destruction, according to the hit-to-kill principle.
One complex can include up to six launchers, each of which can contain eight interceptor missiles. The AN/TPY-2 radar with a viewing sector of 120 degrees and an instrumental target detection range (according to various sources) from 1000 to 2000 kilometers is used for targeting.
Defense Express writes that the main nuance here regarding THAAD is the extremely small probable number of available launchers – only 42 units (according to The Military Balance 2023), or only 7 batteries, of which one battery (according to the same reference book) is now deployed in the South Korea, UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Among other things, the development of the option of deploying THAAD on Israeli territory may mean that the United States is afraid of the option in which the Israeli missile defense system may not be able to cope with the missile threat from Iran on its own.
