North Korea has been pursuing a nuclear weapons program for decades. According to media reports, the North Koreans have recently conducted at least six underground tests of these weapons.
North Korea (DPRK) has apparently started building a new submarine. It will run on nuclear fuel. War Zone wrote about this on Thursday, October 10, citing South Korean intelligence.
A report from South Korea’s Military Intelligence Agency indicated that the construction project is at an early stage. The boat is probably being built at the Pongda Submarine Factory.
According to the publication, it will be larger than those previously collected by North Korea. But its exact size and other details will be known later.
“The conclusions of the South Korean military that the new submarine may be nuclear, probably, due to its size, because so far there is no public evidence that North Korea has developed an appropriate nuclear reactor for such a submarine, however, the Pyongyang’s leadership has made statements that the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine is planned,” writes The War Zone.
It is known that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said in January 2021 that “the design of a new nuclear submarine has been studied and is in the stage of final verification.” He then emphasized that design work on various types of weapons and sensors has been completed.
In the past, Kim Jong-un has said that the DPRK will accelerate steps towards transforming itself into a military superpower and a serious nuclear force.
