Lviv doctors saved a baby who had a stroke in the first week of life.
To save the boy Denisk, weighing only 2.5 kg, neurosurgeons at the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital performed brain surgery on the newborn. The First Medical Association of Lvov reported this on Facebook on October 8.
According to doctors, the baby was born two weeks prematurely and already had pneumonia. A few days later, the newborn suffered a stroke – a cerebral hemorrhage. Subsequently, swelling began to appear, so the newborn was hospitalized with his mother.
Doctors diagnosed the baby with hydrocephalus – an intracranial accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, which without intervention inevitably leads to organ damage. In addition, blood clots formed in the ventricles due to the stroke. They needed to be removed as quickly as possible.
Neurosurgeons began to operate on the baby, who had not yet turned moon and weighed only 2.5 kg. During the first operation, doctors removed blood clots from behind a small incision of just a few millimeters.
And during the second operation, they installed an Ommaya reservoir for the child – a device that, in case of repeated swelling, would help doctors remove excess fluid from the brain and regulate spinal pressure.
Doctors said that after two operations the boy feels better. However, he must remain in the hospital under medical supervision for some time.
Let us recall that in the summer the first completely artificial heart in human history was successfully implanted in the United States. The patient received a TAH BiVACOR, a titanium-made, single-moving-part biventricular rotary blood pump that uses a magnetically levitated rotor to pump blood and replace both failing ventricles of the heart.
