The exercise comes a week after China’s military said its air force and navy conducted maneuvers in the disputed South China Sea.
The armed forces of the Philippines, the United States, Australia, Canada, France and Japan begin joint naval exercises unity in the northern island of Luzon of the Philippines, bordering Taiwan. Reuters reported this on Monday, October 7.
About a thousand sailors and personnel from different countries are taking part in the exercises.
“They will learn anti-submarine, anti-landing and anti-aircraft warfare against the backdrop of growing tensions in relations with China,” the journalists pointed out.
US Navy Rear Admiral Todd Chimikata said the exercises were intended to have a “deterrence effect” and were not directed against any country.
“The purpose of these exercises is not to incite discord. They are aimed at ensuring interoperability. There are people in different countries who do not follow these rules, so we must agree to set these standards,” he said.
The overall exercise will last for nine days. They will include the US Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Howard, the Canadian Halifax-class frigate HMCS Vancouver and the CH-148 Cyclone helicopter, as well as the Japanese ForceShin Maywa US-2 amphibious aircraft and the naval P- 1 and warships from the Philippines.
In Lithuania, the international military exercise Iron Wolf 2024-II will start on October 7, which will last 10 days.
