At next week’s summit, the European Union will express strong support for Ukraine in confronting Russia’s unprovoked invasion and offer support to Moldova on its path to membership in the 27-nation bloc, a draft joint statement says.
The draft, a copy of which was seen by Radio Liberty, would also warn Georgia that recent legislative steps like those taken by Moscow to suppress political opposition and restrict the rights of the LGBT community “jeopardize” Tbilisi’s European integration.
The document, which could still be amended ahead of the Oct. 17-18 summit in Brussels, said the bloc is “irrevocably determined” to support Kyiv “for as long as necessary and as intensely as necessary,” adding: “Russia does not must win.”
Declaring support for peace based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law, the EU affirmed that “no initiative on Ukraine can be carried out without Ukraine.”
