Former US first lady Melania Trump, in her memoirs published on October 8, clearly spoke out against the ban on abortion. Women should make their own decisions about their bodies, she said.
Melania Trump’s statement contradicts the position of her husband Donald Trump, who is running as a presidential candidate from the Republican Party. In particular, during his time in office (2017-2021), Trump appointed three conservative judges to the Supreme Court – they played a decisive role in the abolition of abortion rights in the United States.
Since then, 13 states in the US have completely banned abortion. Some of them do not allow any exceptions, even in cases of rape, incest or threat to health.
A woman’s fundamental right to personal freedom, to her life, gives her the right to terminate a pregnancy if she so desires, Melania Trump writes in her memoirs.
Polls show that the issue of abortion is the fifth most important issue in the election campaign, behind inflation, immigration, health care and jobs.
